How to Choose a Contemporary Area Rug

Posted on July 16, 2012

Area rugs are a great way to add warmth and color to any space, but it can be hard to choose the right now, so we get a lot of questions here at Thingz about choosing the perfect contemporary area rug. There are many things to consider from size, texture, color and more. Picking out the perfect one can certainly be a daunting task, so here are few tips to help you along the way.

The first thing you’ll want to consider is the shape of the rug. Contemporary area rugs can come in nearly any shape or size you want. Most standard rugs are available in square, round and rectangle, but many modern rugs are also customizable and can be made in various other shapes such as octagon, oval or star-shaped like rug below. When choosing the shape of your rug, you’ll first want to consider the shape of the room. For example, many contemporary homes have curved walls and many are decorated with curvy, contemporary furniture. It wouldn’t make since to pair this look with a square or rectangular rug, so we would want to look for a round or oval. If your home has clean, straight, modern lines then you’ll want to keep an eye out for something rectangular or square.

Next you’ll want to think about the size of your contemporary rug. Obviously, larger rooms call for larger area rugs and smaller rooms require smaller area rugs. But one question we get quite often here at Thingz is where furniture should sit on the rug. For example, in a dining room, should all of the legs of the dining chairs sit on the rug, or is it okay for the back legs to sit on the floor? Or in living room does the furniture need to sit completely on the rug? Unfortunately, there is no right or right or wrong answer as this actually boils down to personal preference. Sometimes it looks best to use a large rug with a border that surrounds the furniture, while in other spaces, a rug that just sits in front of the furniture  looks great and can certainly be less expensive. What we suggest is to take blue painter’s tape and lay it out both ways to see which looks more appealing.

That leaves us with possibly the hardest decisions of all – color and texture. First we’ll tackle color. Area rugs are an easy way to add color to a space. You’ll want to be sure that the color of your rug ties into other colors in the room. If you want to add a pop of red, be sure to tie it in with throw pillows or art. The texture can be a little bit trickier. Modern area rugs come in a variety of textures from low piles to long, plush shags like the one below. While a shag seems warm inviting, it may not be the best choice for pets or kids since they are a bit tricky to vacuum. You’ll definitely want to consider comfort and your lifestyle when making your decision.

Whatever you choose, get ready to enjoy the warmth and comfort of your new contemporary rug!
