Mirror, Mirror on the Wall
People have long been fascinated by mirrors. It probably dates back to a couple of millennia before the birth of Christ, starting from reflections in the water and polished volcanic stones. Later, shiny metals came about and before anybody could ask who the true fairest of them all is, glass mirrors were invented.
It’s interesting how an object initially used for grooming has evolved to carry so many functions. From personal grooming and art application to safety implementation and home decoration, mirrors have come to be objects of immeasurable significance. In home décor alone, it has so many uses that it would be a very strange house to exist without at least one wall mirror in it.
For starters, mirrors continue to be used for grooming. Bathrooms and bedrooms are usually adorned with full-length wall mirrors to allow people to check their reflection from head to toe. Some people do not think it necessary to have a full-length mirror and are content to hang one on the wall above the sink. However, full-length mirrors, if there’s room for them, are much more practical as you can more thoroughly check yourself before stepping out. A skirt tucked in your underpants, an open fly, and toilet paper stuck to your heel are just some circumstances when a full length wall mirror comes in handy. Of course, a wall mirror right by the front door is also great for last-minute self-inspection before stepping out of the house.
Wall mirrors can also be used to suggest the illusion of space. If you inspect model units of small apartments, you’ll often find one complete wall or a big portion of it covered with a floor-to-ceiling mirror. Undoubtedly, that’s a strategic design move. That small unit appears double its actual size. Many buyers find themselves wondering after the purchase why their own units seem smaller than the model. Do they have different dimensions? No. To achieve the same illusion of space, they simply have to install a similar wall mirror.
Naturally, wall mirrors can be simultaneously functional and decorative. There are so many to choose from and you can pick whatever reflects your personal style or the theme of your room. You can play with whimsical mirrors by hanging them in a collection of wall art. You can also use their shapes or frames to complement the look of your room. You can even use a mirror to add attention to a focal point by having it reflect the dorsal side or the profile.
Properly installed and creatively used, wall mirrors can definitely do wonders for the décor of a room as well as make staying in it even more pleasurable.
